;In my March 17 column in The Japan Times, I wrote about traditional Japanese flutes. The photo above is of three very different types of Japanese side-blown flutes, all owned by Takahashi Takanobu, proprietor of an online flute shop called Ryuseido 邦声堂. From top to bottom, they are a shinobue, noukan, and kagurabue. There are more pictures on the Ryuseido website, but the text is entirely in Japanese. For related information in English, check out the website for the Yokobue Kenkyukai (Society for the Study of Side-blown Flutes), of which Mr. Takahashi is chair.
